“The ear tends to be lazy, craves the familiar and is shocked by the unexpected; the eye, on the other hand, tends to be impatient, craves the novel and is bored by repetition.”  W.H. Auden.

"Unexpected experiences" mixed media portrait in Strathmore Visual journal

“Unexpected Experiences”.  9 x 12 mixed media in Strathmore Visual Mixed Media Journal.  Mixed media includes acrylics, Inktense pencils, Neocolor II, metallic paints, and collage.

This painting took almost a year to complete. It was another case of a portrait not quite meeting up to my expectations.

Thankfully, I had worked in a journal. I still remain surprised as to how well different types of paper will accept all the paint I can throw at it. Working in a journal means that I am not adding more canvases to my little art room already overflowing with art supplies including blank and completed canvases.

Every once in a while, I search for something that I started and never finished and I found her.  After a few “what ifs”, I knew that I would be able to make someone appear on the page.

Some days are just like that.
