Canadians can be grateful for our quiet holiday
Lovely leafy screen

Today, on a holiday Monday, I am grateful that:

We live in a peaceful, democratic country.

Family and friends are safe and healthy.

There was no Black Friday and no Cyber Monday pandemonium and consumer riots in our Canadian cities. (Canadian stores have tried to emulate our neighbours to the south in November but these hyped up "holidays" have largely been unsuccessful north of 49th parallel).

There won't be long line-ups of passengers with short fuses waiting to board overbooked flights. Traffic will not be much heavier than a usual weekend on our highways.

We will enjoy peaceful walks admiring the splendid fall colours, we will play boisterous board games with family or friends, maybe watch a movie or two (weather depending) before or after dinner.

Similar to our American friends, our dinner tonight (or last night for some of us) might be turkey with all the trimmings followed by pumpkin pie or apple crisp, but it could just as well be hot dogs and french fries at a roadside stand on the way home from a blissful weekend at the cottage.

It is indeed a subdued Thanksgiving.

And I am so thankful for that.

Finally, I am thankful for you, my readers and followers. May you enjoy countless blessings in the months to follow.

  • I had the pleasure of holidaying on Vancouver Island with old friends, a couple of weeks back. The maples were beginning to turn when we were there. It is such a beautiful part of the world and we feel privileged to have been able to travel there, twice now. The fall colours are quite remarkable, like Canada!

    • That must have been really spectacular with the mountains as a backdrop. We visited the west coast in 2019 and would love to return some day. Happy you enjoyed yourself.

  • Hello Louise, Thanksgiving is such a celebration in Canada and the US, I’m surprised it hasn’t started here considering we seem to be sheep and follow everything that everyone else does eg, Halloween and Black Friday. I thought our Boxing Day sales were bad enough! No, I have never participated. Loved your post today and the beautiful photos.

    • Thanks Sally. I am sure that come November, some of the Black Friday, Cyber Monday frenzy will come our way but I know that merchants tried it and it didn’t really take here the way it does in the States. Perhaps our best discounts are on Boxing Day after all…I avoid stores on all of those days.
