Lake Ontario's deep, silent water -

Painted a while back, this waterscape remained untitled until recently.

Then I heard Blue Rodeo (Canadian country rock band) singing Hasn't Hit Me Yet in Toronto at the end of August. Suddenly, I knew the painting had a name.

As I mentioned in a previous post, there are many ways to title a painting and sometimes, a song will say exactly what the painting meant to say since the day it was finished.

Down in the middle of Lake Ontario

The same snow is falling

On the deep silent water

The great dark wonder

Into the waves of my heart.

(Blue Rodeo - Hasn't Hit Me Yet 1993)

The beach reminds me of Sandbanks Provincial Park where we brought the kids camping when they were young.

In those days, we worried about sand in our bathing suits, whether we remembered the marshmallows, and whether or not we had enough cheap wine to share with our friends in the evening (that French wine Piat D'Or, was very popular in the 80s).

Maybe we worried about our jobs and mortgages, but those were quickly forgotten with lots of wine as we sat by the campfire.

In many ways, they were simpler times or so it seems looking back!

Deep Silent Water of Lake Ontario by Louise Primeau
Deep Silent Water of Lake Ontario. Painted on a 1.5 "gallery wrapped 4 x 4 canvas, this was recently gifted to a friend.

Expansive orange sky over Lake Ontario.

The flamboyant orange sky in the painting is one that cannot be ignored. It definitely makes a statement.

Of course, I have my own interpretation of it. Any painting should have a bit of mystery, and maybe even some disagreement on meaning of colour, shapes, composition...

This summer has been memorable for forest fires, as well as political fires.

The latter spread as quickly as the former fires and cause as much damage - short  and long term.

Sometimes there is so much smoke that we can't tell which way the wind is blowing.

Maybe that's why that orange sky feels a bit ominous over Lake Ontario...

...or maybe it's just a spectacular sunset - you decide!

  • Dear Louise thank you very much for this wonderful painting of Lake Ontario. I admire the colors, especially the contrast between sky and water. But I have also to mention the words you find. They’re so touching.

    • I think we may all look to the past with those rose coloured glasses…in other words, we probably had just as many worries back then as now, but time has allowed those worries to vanish from memory and only the good memories remain embedded for us to consider as we age. Have a great week Birgit. Thank you for stopping by.
