Painted birds awaken the canvas for spring.

With these painted birds, spring does not quietly arrive — it awakens. Each feather carries the colours of early morning light, each wing seeks a parcel of thawing earth, or failing that, the warmth of the sun through the leaves of a tree. These are tiny keepers of the season’s first songs.

And if you look closely, you might catch them mid-conversation — balancing on a precariously built nest, or simply waiting for the spring breeze. One bird tilts its head as if considering flight; another seems ready to burst into a delightful song only the spring buds can hear.

In my painted world, gravity is only a suggestion, but colour is joy.

Colour returns gently — in flashes of gold, bluish green, and emerald. Nests are build with slivers of scrapbook material. Watercolour birds are cut out and placed over  nests as protectors of the soon to be hatchlings.  Hummingbirds flit over daisies or imaginary pink flowers.

On my canvas, in the art room, spring is finding its wings in the quiet space between brushstrokes.

  • Hello Louise, I feel like saying chirp chirp with all those birds, such a fabulous array and I was quite taken with your whimsical birds, another great post.

  • Sorry dear Louise, my post comes late. We spent a week in Bavaria to make AnJa’s grave new for spring. Now we’re back home. I admire your birdies, especially the hummingbirds. I never saw these birds in real life. I think they are looking wonderful, like the birds on your paintings. Have a wonderful day dear friend.

    • Have a great week Birgit. Spring will be late this year since we still have snow. Rosie loves snow but I am looking forward to seeing if my plants that we put in new flower beds survived.

    • Thank you Vivienne. The birds are a bit confused…snow is lingering and winter appears to want to stay with us a while more. Cheers.
