Maltese and Yorkie enjoying sunshine

A brief patch of sunshine on a long weekend.

Sophie, a Maltese, and Coco, a Yorkie, have found the prime spot in the house.

They are enjoying the sunshine while it lasts.

I photographed these girls on Friday. Since then, we have had fall type weather. In fact, the heat is still on in most homes which is very unusual for this time of the year in Canada.

And so, when I decided to take out my watercolours, I needed to paint a cheerful puppy to forget the dark mood outdoors.

Below is Sunny, the newest addition to my pet portrait portfolio.

I think Sunny might be a poodle although I am not sure. No matter. I was simply answering the urge to paint something, anything! Watercolours are easily transported and are the medium of choice for now.

See the smile on Sunny's face?

She is loving the warm weather that sun starved Canadians crave after a long winter followed by spring floods and cold temperatures. When will we see the sun?  Who knows!

I painted Sunny using Sakura Koi Pocket Field Sketchbox watercolours along with Jane Davenport watercolours on Strathmore watercolor paper.

I wasn't entirely pleased with the final result - this is the first time I choose watercolours to paint a dog. For that reason, I played with the image in various apps. There is always a way to save a painting!

Keep warm everyone!

  • Sophie and Coco look comfy on that couch! We are having unusual weather here too. It has been an extra mild and dry autumn and we still haven’t lit our fire yet. Sunny is lovely!

    • Hi Christine: You are heading into your winter while we are looking at a very short summer season this year. Wishing you a warmer and gentler winter than ours has been!
