Jack, the Wire-haired Fox Terrier is a special boy.

I am very certain that all our fur babies are special in their own unique way. My Rosie, for example, loves to sleep on my foot. My other dogs much preferred my lap to my foot. Sometimes, as dogs age, their familiar behaviours change. Unfortunately, our four-legged companions are also vulnerable to various ailments and frailties similar to their human family members. Jack, now in his senior years (11 years old), has Cushing’s Disease, a “type of tumour that affects everything from inside to outside, therefore I am trying to get a memory of him before the unthinkable happens.”

Client requests for Jack's portrait.

This client contacted me in May requesting a portrait of her Wire-haired Fox Terrier for end of July. Jack’s portrait would be a 40th birthday gift for her husband.

The client sent me several photos specifying she wanted an 11 x 14 head portrait. She preferred that I paint Jack from a photo taken when he was younger because “his hair does not grow back the way it used to.” Her husband would have a portrait to remember Jack in his prime.

Feedback as I progressed.

Over the course of several weeks in June and July, I sent the client many progress shots.  She confirmed the background colour and sent me more photos of the eyes.

The painting was completed several days in advance of the client’s husband’s birthday party.

Her comments as I finished the last steps: “Wow! He is fabulous!!! I am so happy with the painting! Thank you so much!!

And then once the gift was opened by her husband, she sent me a further email: “Thank you again for the portrait of Jack. My husband loved him! He was so surprised! The portrait is hanging proudly on our wall in the living room.”

Here is sweet, goofy Jack painted in acrylic, on 11 x 14 gallery wrapped canvas. Look at those little teeth under his snout!  He is enjoying himself running to meet his master I think!

The sides are painted the same colour as the background. Isn't he a cutie!

I love putting a smile on people’s faces when they see their fur babies on canvas.

Jack is the second terrier I have painted.  Last year, I painted Axl, a Wheaten Terrier, on a 20 x24” gallery wrapped canvas. Read the testimonial here.
